Understanding when to leave the door cracked vs when to close it firmly:
Use a Soft No When:
- You genuinely might want to do it later (but not now)
- The relationship is valuable and you want to preserve future opportunities
- You're declining a one-time ask from someone you care about
Soft No Example: "I can't take this on right now, but I'd love to revisit it in Q3 if you're still looking for support."
Use a Hard No When:
- You will never want to do this, no matter the timing
- The person has repeatedly disrespected your boundaries
- Leaving the door open will create ongoing pressure or guilt
Hard No Example: "I won't be able to help with this. I hope you find the right person for it!"
