Commentary on Chapter 9
with Peaches, Biscuit, and Mary
Peaches (The Cat): Oh, wow. Chapter 9 is a complete secondhand-embarrassment disaster zone. Mrs. Bennet arrives at Netherfield with the younger sisters, and she basically opens her mouth and lets a dumpster fire roll out. She started bragging about how great the country is compared to the city, totally insulting Darcy’s intelligence, and acting like her family is the greatest thing to ever happen to England.
Mary: It's so painful to read. She’s completely unaware of how tacky she’s being. She even publicly argues with Darcy about country life vs. city life, thinking she’s winning the debate, when really she’s just proving how narrow-minded she is.
Biscuit (The Corgi): Wait, Mary! Why is she barking at Mr. Darcy? Is she trying to protect Jane? Because when the delivery guy comes too close to the front door, I also make myself look very big and loud! Maybe she's just a good guard mom?
Peaches: No, Biscuit, she's not a guard mom; she's an absolute loose cannon. She is trying to secure Bingley for Jane, but her method is the human equivalent of running headfirst into a screen door. It’s loud, messy, and leaves a mark. The Bingley sisters were smirking behind their fans the entire time, and Darcy looked like he wanted to evaporate through the floorboards.
Mary: Elizabeth was absolutely mortified. She tried to change the subject, but then Lydia chimed in and started loudly demanding that Mr. Bingley keep his promise to throw a ball at Netherfield.
Biscuit: Ooh! A ball! I love balls! Did Mr. Bingley throw it right then? Did he throw a tennis ball across the fancy rug for Lydia to chase?! Because Mr. Bingley is a very good boy and I bet he has a great throwing arm!
Peaches: It’s a dance ball, Biscuit, not a fetch ball. But Bingley, being the total pushover golden retriever that he is, immediately smiled and said he’d absolutely keep his promise and throw the party as soon as Jane is fully recovered.
Mary: He really is incredibly good-natured. Once Mrs. Bennet finally takes her loud crew home, Elizabeth is left behind to deal with the social aftermath.
Peaches: If I were Elizabeth, I would have climbed up the curtains and refused to come down until 2027. The sheer mental toll of having a mom that loud in a house full of billionaires is staggering. I need a nap just thinking about it.
Mary: It only gets more complicated from here. Ready to see the fallout in Chapter 10?
