Commentary on Chapter 3

with Peaches, Biscuit, and Mary

Peaches (The Cat): Oh wow, the neighborhood ball was an absolute rollercoaster! Mr. Bingley turned out to be the ultimate golden retriever human—just pure, unfiltered good vibes, dancing every single dance and smiling at everyone in the room.

Mary: He really made a fantastic first impression. The whole town of Meryton is already in love with him. But the real drama was his friend, Mr. Darcy.

Biscuit (The Corgi): Hey! Golden retrievers are great! They always share their toys! But wait, what about his fancy friend? The super-rich one? Did he have a cool toy to share?

Peaches: Ugh, Mr. Darcy is the worst, Biscuit. He walked into the assembly room, stood in the corner, and refused to play with anyone. He has ten thousand a year, but his face looked like someone just held a slice of lemon right under his nose. He’s that one anti-social cat who sits on top of the refrigerator and judges the entire house party. He even called our girl Elizabeth "tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me." The absolute audacity!

Biscuit: *Gasps!* He didn't want to play with Elizabeth?! But she has the best energy! If someone told me I was only "tolerable," I would drop my favorite ball, curl up in my crate, and cry. How did Elizabeth react, Mary? Did she zoom away to hide?

Mary: Not at all! She actually just laughed and told the story to all her friends. She didn't let him ruin her night at all.

Peaches: Please, Elizabeth is a queen. She handles rejection the exact same way I handle missing a jump onto the kitchen counter—she just pretends she meant to land on the floor, grooms her paw for two seconds, and walks away looking incredibly cool. Meanwhile, Mrs. Bennet is absolutely furious and spent the whole car ride home trashing Darcy to Mr. Bennet.

Biscuit: I do not like Mr. Darcy. He sounds like a scary statue. I bet if you sat next to him on the couch, he wouldn't even drop a single piece of cheese popcorn on purpose.

Peaches: He definitely wouldn't, Biscuit. He’d probably look at the popcorn, calculate its caloric value, and write a sternly worded letter to the manufacturer about proper floor sanitation. But Jane and Bingley are officially obsessed with each other, so the plot is officially moving!

Mary: It's the perfect setup for everything to come. Ready to head back to Chapter 4 now that we've got the ball covered?
