Commentary on Chapter 2
with Peaches, Biscuit, and Mary
Peaches (The Cat): Mary, look at the text. I was right. Mr. Bennet is officially my spirit animal. He secretly visited Mr. Bingley days ago, but he let his wife suffer through three whole pages of dramatic sighing just to watch her spin in circles like a cat chasing a laser pointer. That is masterful psychological warfare.
Mary: It really is the ultimate dad joke of the 19th century. He let the whole family think they were missing out just to drop the news casually while trimming a lamp wick.
Biscuit (The Corgi): Wait, Mary! He went to the big Netherfield house?! Did he bring back any of the fancy rich-guy sticks from the yard? Or maybe some expensive mud? Tell me there's mud!
Mary: No mud, Biscuit. Just the social confirmation that they are allowed to visit him now. Mrs. Bennet was so relieved she started shouting that he's the best husband in the world.
Peaches: The emotional whiplash in that living room is terrifying. She went from full "my poor nerves" meltdown to pure, unadulterated screaming joy because of a five-word sentence. It’s exactly like when you pick up my feather wand, Mary. I lose all dignity and my pupils engulf my entire face. I see myself in her madness, and I don't like it.
Biscuit: Oh, I know that feeling! That’s like when you say the word W-A-L-K out loud, Mary! You think it's just a normal Tuesday, and then suddenly—BAM! Everything is loud and exciting and my stubby tail is wagging so fast I might accidentally launch myself into the kitchen cabinets!
Mary: And just like you two after a major burst of energy, Mr. Bennet immediately fled to his library to get away from the noise.
Peaches: Highly relatable. When you and your friends start squealing over your reality TV shows, Mary, I also immediately retreat underneath the guest bed for a tactical three-hour nap. Humans are exhausting.
Biscuit: But Mary! If they go to the party now, do you think Mr. Bingley will let me sniff his shoes? I bet rich human shoes smell amazing. Like expensive leather and fancy puddles. Let's open the next chapter! I need to know if the shoes match the hype!
